I just got back from eating and drinking at Barzón, the new East Austin bar by the popular East Austin restaurant Takoba. Takoba closed a year ago for renovations and still isn’t open just yet but Barzón is! Barzón was previously Cantina El Milamores.

To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by Barzón since I never loved the food at Takoba. Barzón’s menu was created by a Venezuelan chef who will also be revamping the menu at Takoba when it reopens so the food is much more elevated and not your typical bar food. The pork pozole soup, chicken flautas, and esquites with tortilla chips were #kokoapproved delicious. The menu also features shrimp ceviche and fish ceviche but we did not try those. I’m sipping on the passion fruit cocktail with mezcal and it was perfect! Barzón is also dog-friendly!

Barzón is open on Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm to 2am.

Happy hour is 5pm – 7pm:

  • 1/2 off all food items except seafood

Reverse happy hour is 11pm to 2pm:

  • 1/2 off all food items
  • $1.5 bottle beers
  • 1/2 off frozen guava cocktails
  • 1/2 off El Jimador Margarita (frozen or on the rocks)

Chicken Flautas

Chicken Flautas

The chicken flautas were crunchy over a bed of refried black beans – watch out for that red salsa because it’s fiery 🔥.

Esquites

Esquites

The esquites are slightly charred and super fresh – served with freshly fried tortilla chips. SO GOOD.

Pork Pozole Soup

My favorite was the pork pozole soup – it’s surprising that one of the best pozole soups that I’ve had in Austin is served at a bar!
