Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast

Hello from Amalfi Coast! This is my first time to Italy (actually, my first time to Europe!), so I was super nervous to visit a new destination outside the States. Visiting Rome was the purpose of this trip but I wanted to visit at least one other region in Italy. It was either day trip from Rome to Amalfi Coast or Florence. I ended up picking Amalfi since Rome would already give me the city experience.

Visiting a new country makes me nervous so I wanted to be cautious of booking tours through a reputable website like TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest provider of tours, activities, and attractions, with more than 56,000 bookable experiences in 2,500 destinations worldwide. This was my first time using TripAdvisor and I was surprised by how easy it was to navigate through the website and read reviews from previous customers.

I found the Amalfi Coast Small-Group Day Trip from Rome Including Positano experience on TripAdvisor and easily booked it from the website. The voucher and tour instructions were immediately sent to my inbox. Read on for my day trip from Rome to Amalfi Coast!

Rome Termini

8AM: Take the two-hour train from Rome Termini to Napoli (Naples). This is already included in the ticket price but if you’re traveling on your own, it’s $14-56. If you have time to spare, ask the locals where you can find fried pizza in Naples. Let me repeat, fried pizza is only in Naples. There was a van waiting for us right at the entrance of the Naples train station so we immediately hit the road.

The car ride from Naples to Sorento is about an hour but you’ll be greeted with an incredible view! We stopped for 5 minutes for a quick photo and then headed to Positano.

Positano, Amalfi Coast

From Sorento to Positano was a 30-minute car ride winding around the Amalfi Coast Road. You know those postcards with the beautiful Italian coast? Positano is 100x even more beautiful in person. The colorful cliffside houses, the stunning blue ocean, and whitewashed walls lined with local boutiques – I could spend days here. I definitely want to make a trip back to Positano and stay at one of the tiny hotels facing the ocean!

We had an hour and a half in Positano. With such a short stop in Positano, what’s there to do?

  • Buy leather sandals – there are several shoe shops that will make a custom sandal for you in 20 minutes. Costs 50€ to 85€
  • Lunch with a view – you can either lunch on the beach or walk up the hill to dine at a restaurant looking down at the ocean
  • Shop for linen clothing
  • Layout on Spiaggia Grande beach
  • Paddleboard or kayak – wouldn’t recommend if you’re only there for the hour like me
  • Visit Church of Santa Maria
  • Hike the Path of the Gods – the path is almost 5 miles and takes about 3 hours
  • Take tons of photos!

The van actually dropped us off near Spiaggia Grande beach but I wanted to eat at a restaurant that had higher vantage that looked down at the beach so we walked up the hill for 15 minutes and stopped at Caffè Positano. I wouldn’t say the food at Caffè Positano was the best but the view certainly was!

We finally arrived in Amalfi! It was a 40-minute drive from Positano to Amalfi so we were allowed only one hour here. Amalfi is such a pretty and petite town with sun-filled piazzas, gelato shops, and Italian restaurants serving fresh seafood.

  • Visit the Amalfi Cathedral
  • Visit the Amalfi Paper Museum
  • Eat gelato
  • Enjoy fresh seafood at the restaurants
  • Hang out on the beach!
